Ginger Commander

A computer systems engineer with advanced degrees in both digital security and psychology, Ginger Commander's professional career grew with the internet. She watched the rapid growth of the "information superhighway" from the inside, as it changed from its origins as a close academic connection pool, into a hotbed of emerging business. Riding the eCommerce boom that followed, she developed secure online shopping for small businesses, who were just establishing their web presences. As the internet began to mature, she took her new security skills to the Department of Defense, where she authored tools for wartime data security. Today, she spends her time in the financial sector, integrating servers and software that sit on the leading edge of mobile telecoms technology. Commended for her defense work by Army brass, and an active participant in decades of digital security evolution, Ginger is now a key contributor to Rick Mann's cyber-safety campaign, "Think Before You Click." She is a published author, and "she writes voraciously." For fun, she enjoys writing in almost every genre, from cyber-punk to poetry to fairy tales. However, the focus of her professional writing is always on technology. In particular: Technology, and the human. Ginger has served technical users and administrators across multiple sectors, from K-12 education to military testing. Everywhere she goes, notices a common theme: System security is almost always under the operator's control. This is why, she says, that she writes for the user first. Tweaks to a computer's configuration might help in a crisis, but an ounce of prevention is usually worth a pound of code. It is Ginger's sincere hope that, by raising awareness of how people increase their own risk, she can help users to help themselves. Look to her blog posts for simple, behavioral changes that every person can make, to better manage the wilds of cyberspace.

Let’s face it, parents. Our kids aren’t listening. They have a million things on their minds, and we don’t make the list. No, they’re not bad kids, but . . . just sayin’. What happened last time you asked her to clean her room?

Take that reality and throw it up against the wall. Not just any wall, your home’s internet firewall. Fact: they’re addicted to every thing with a smart screen. Fact: one chat session can derail homework and mental health in a second. More? They can’t quit this. Not on their own. Continue reading
